Albemarle County, VA – June 4 – A Staunton, Virginia man was arrested Saturday night after leading police on a high-speed chase.
According to NBC29.com, the incident occurred when police spotted Richard Merle Hawkins, 51, speeding down Interstate 64 at 120 miles per hour.
When police attempted to pursue him, Hawkins sped off in his Chevy Corvette and eventually crashed at the Virginia Department of Transportation Memorial.
He then ditched the wrecked car at a rest stop and hitched a ride to Waynesboro, where police arrested him two hours later.
Hawkins was transported to the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail and now faces charges for reckless driving, felony attempting to elude police, possession of a gun, and drug paraphernalia.
