A new survey by the American Automobile Association has found that more than half of American drivers don’t know that their tires are bald and need replacing.
The survey found that 52% of drivers are driving with bald tires, while 55% have at least one tire that is under inflated.
With the summer months ahead, AAA warns that this can be a dangerous combination. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, underinflated tires lead to more than 600 fatalities yearly and more than 33,000 injuries.
AAA has offered the following tips to help keep you and your family safe on the road during the summer months:
- Rotate and align tires as necessary, as misaligned tires can result in rapid and uneven tread wear.
- Check tire pressures at least once a month.
- Check tread depth regularly. To do so, place a quarter upside down in the tread grooves on multiple locations on the tire. If you can see the top of Washington’s head at any point, you need to replace the tire.
