With spring in full swing, Fairfax County police are ramping up their pedestrian safety law enforcement to help ensure pedestrians stay safe, reports WTOP.com.
Police have started handing out tickets to both drivers and pedestrians who are breaking traffic laws in the hopes of curbing future pedestrian accidents.
In the last two years, pedestrian law violations have increased by 173 percent in Fairfax County and police are eager to change people’s mind in terms of jaywalking by fining those engaging in the illegal activity.
A fatal accident last Thursday has fueled the police effort. A pedestrian was struck on Leesburg Pike late Thursday evening and died of their injuries. Fairfax police are continuing to investigate to determine whether or not the pedestrian was using the crosswalk.
