The Virginia lawyer who faces a DUI charge and two counts of manslaughter after killing a couple riding a motorcycle in Ashburn, VA will remain in jail after a judge stayed his bond, reports NBC Washington.
Ashburn resident and attorney Mark Sgarlata, 52, was drunk when he made a left turn into a shopping center on Oct. 6 and collided with Ricky and Leia Wrenn who were traveling on their motorcycle. Both of them were killed in the crash. Sgarlata, a partner at a Tysons Corner law firm in McLean, Virginia, was arrested at the scene and has been in jail since then.
At the Friday bond hearing, the judge on the case set it at $25,000, but prosecutors quickly demanded for no bond and the judge agreed, staying the bond and keeping Sgarlata behind bars until an appeal occurs in Circuit Court.
Friends and relatives of the deceased couple attended the hearing, and were pleased with the judge’s decision to keep Sgarlata in jail. Court documents say that Sgarlata had a blood alcohol concentration of .223, according to a breath test taken at the scene of the accident. A second test later in the night recorded Sgarlata’s BAC at .15.
This is not Sgarlata’s first drunk driving charge, as he was arrested in March 2011 for DUI , but pleaded it down to reckless driving and had his license restricted for six months.
Ricky Wrenn, a navy veteran, was working as a manager at ADT Security Systems, responsible for the security of Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport. Ricky and Leia were motorcycle lovers and part of a motorcycle group called Iron Order Motorcycle Club; they spent Sunday with the group before they died on their way home.
