The Consumer Product Safety Commission, in conjunction with Angelcare Monitors Inc.®, is announcing the recall of Angelcare Movement and Sound Baby Monitors after two babies died because of a strangulation hazard.
The cord that is attached to the baby monitor’s sensory pad is hidden under the mattress of the crib, and can pose a strangulation hazard if the baby manages to pull the cord into the crib and it becomes wrapped around the child’s neck.
Two babies have died from the defective product, one in November 2011 when a 13-month-old girl died in San Diego, California, and another in August 2004 when an 8-month-old girl died in Oregon. In both instances, the baby had pulled the cord attached to the sensor pad into the crib.
Two other reports have also been filed of sensor pad cords from Angelcare baby monitor models wrapping around infants, but neither of those reports included fatalities.
The recall involves Movement and Sound Monitors manufactured by Angelcare, which uses a sensor pad placed underneath the baby’s mattress to monitor sound and movement. Angelcare is providing repair kits that include a rigid protective cord cover, a new warning about the strangulation risk, and new instructions to those costumers with specified models. The defective monitors were sold at Babies R Us/Toys R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Meijer, Sears, Walmart, Amazon.com, Target.com, Overstock.com, and almost 70 other small baby specialty stores between October 1999 and September 2013 in the price range of $100-$300.
