About the Smartphone Overuse Awareness Scholarship
Nearly all Americans (95%) now own a cell phone, according to the Pew Research Center. And 77% of Americans own a smartphone, up from 35% in 2011.
“We should recognize the value of smartphones in that they connect us instantly to information, entertainment, and each other,” said attorney Jim Parrish of the Parrish Law Firm, PLLC. “But we should also reflect on the way in which smartphones have permeated nearly every facet of our lives. We should ask ourselves if our overuse of smartphones is healthy for us as individuals and as a society.”
Parrish is interested in what young people have to say about this issue. “Smartphones have been ever-present for the entirety of many young people’s lives. Like previous generations, the next generation must find ways to forge healthy relationships with technology.”
Experts are studying our habitual use of smartphones, asking what effects smartphones are having on our relationships and how we can strike a better balance.
