According to numbers released by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles, the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, and Arlington experienced more than 20,000 car accidents during the calendar year 2013. That number may not seem too high given the number of cars on the road. However, if you think of it this way, then the number seems dramatically different: If there are 365 days in a year, that’s 55 accidents each day. Fifty-five. That number does not include the accidents reported each year n Loudoun County (4,186), or Stafford County (2,048), or those in the cities of Fairfax (615) and Manassas (567).
Whether you drive primarily on I-66 and the Beltway, or only drive on county roads, a car accident could happen to you. If you drive fast or slow, if you drive a larger car, or a smaller car, an accident could happen to you. At a rate of more than 55 accidents per day, every day, car accidents don’t discriminate – the numbers clearly point that out.
A recent study issued by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed which cars on the road are the safest, and which have proven to be the most dangerous.
“The highest death rates are in the smallest, lightest vehicles,” said IIHS spokesman Russ Rader “It’s Packaging 101: If the occupant compartment stays intact, the seat belts and air bags can do their jobs.”
