G8 world leaders have finally acknowledged the problem of counterfeit drugs, reports kff.org.
The Leaders of G8 met at Camp David on the weekend of May 18 and 19, 2012 planning to address the global economic situation and worldwide political challenges.
The G8 Camp David Declaration, put together by some of the largest and most powerful nations in the world, reads in relation to counterfeit drugs, “‘to protect public health and consumer safety, we also commit to exchange information on rogue Internet pharmacy sites in accordance with national law and share best practices on combating counterfeit medical products.”
It is noted that counterfeit medical products are to blame for approximately 100,000 deaths per year worldwide, and provide criminal operations with around $75 billion in annual revenue.
The G8’s recognition of the problem of counterfeit drugs is the first of any top leaders to address the problem at one of their meetings, and raises issues of both the health risks and economic consequences of counterfeit drug trafficking.
