The state of Virginia was recently voted as the number one most bicycle-friendly state in the southern United States.
Virginia also ranked in the top twenties in the entire nation and received a status of the 17th most bicycle-friendly state in the country, reports fairfaxstation.patch.com.
The rankings come from a recently released list compiled by The League of American Bicyclists and are used to assess and improve each state’s policies and infrastructure for bicyclists.
States are ranked based on scores ranging from one to five—with one being the worst and five being the best—in five different categories.
Virginia received a five for “Policies and Programs,” a three for “Education and Encouragement,” a three for “Evaluation and Planning,” a two for “Legislation and Enforcement,” and a two for “Infrastructure and Funding,” giving it a score of 15.
Officials in Fairfax County are creating a Bicycle Transportation Master Plan that is “geared toward identifying specific road and trail improvements that are needed to accommodate and encourage bicycling within and between activity and population centers throughout Fairfax County.”
The Master Plan was to be discussed at the George Mason Regional Library from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6.
