Nestlé USA has recalled a number of their Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder drink mixes due to possible salmonella contamination of one of their ingredients, reports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall includes NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder in 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce containers, produced in early October of 2012 with an expiration date of October, 2014. No other NESQUIK products are affected, including their ready-to-drink bottles. For a complete list of affected product codes, click here.
Omya Inc., an ingredient supplier for Nestlé USA, recently notified them that it had recalled certain lots of calcium carbonate, a component of NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder, because of the possibility of salmonella contamination.
So far, there have been no reported illnesses connected to the defective products, but consumers who have purchased affected Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder mixes should immediately return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers can also contact Nestlé Consumer Services at (800) 628-7679.
Salmonella symptoms may include abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea. While the illness can last between four and seven days and will generally clear up on its own, the infection can be life threatening for elders, babies, and pregnant women with weak immune symptoms.
