Most Virginia motor-vehicle accidents are minor, perhaps resulting in a dented bumper and a bruised knee. However, any injury, no matter how big or small, needs the proper treatment and care in order to heal fully and properly.
Parrish Law Firm, PLLC is here to give you some tips on first aid wound care, courtesy of WebMD, to make sure that you recover from your car accident injury as soon as possible.
The Myths
There are a few misconceptions out there that we need to get straight. The following tips will help you break those molds.
- Don’t use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on your wound, as they can harm tissues and delay healing. Cool water and gentle soap is the best way to clean a wound to prevent infection.
- Don’t let your wound get dry. A moist wound heals faster and will help dressings from sticking.
- Don’t leave a wound open to “air out.” Bandage the wound immediately after the injury to prevent the area from dirt and bacteria. Remember to clean the wound thoroughly before applying a bandage
- Don’t rip off a bandage. Pulling the bandage off slowly will help make sure the scab remains intact. If it feels as though the scab is coming off with the bandage, soak the wound in water to soften it, and then try again.
- Don’t put butter on a burn. This can make the injury much worse. Put the burn under cool, running water and then cover the area with sterilized gauze bandages. Make sure to use a non-stick bandage though, and cover the wound loosely so there is no chance of the burn sticking to the dressing.
