It’s summer and it’s hot under this Virginia sky. But with so much to do outdoors it’s easy to get a little too much sun. Here are some summer tips to help you beat the heat and make sure you escape sunburn and sun stroke free.
Summer Safety Tips to Beat the Heat
- Drink more water. It’s always a safe bet and your best choice. Cold water can cause cramping, so go with room temperature when you can. Avoid sugary and alcoholic beverages, which do more harm than good for you hydration level.
- If it’s too hot, stay indoors. Find a place with air conditioning (shopping mall or library) to make sure you don’t overheat on extremely hot days.
- Take a cold shower. These can lower your core temperature and help prevent heat-related illnesses.
- Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing. This helps you get some airflow and won’t absorb the sun’s heat.
Keep an eye on the very young and very old. Infants and the elderly are much more susceptible to heat related-illnesses so keep a careful eye on them throughout the day. - Be active in the morning or early evening. Mid-afternoon is the hottest part of the day, so get ahead of the heat by getting outside in the morning or as the sun sets.
- Wear sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Try a wide brim hat too, which will keep you cool and shaded.
- Rest in the shade. Take a minute to cool down in a shaded area and grab a drink of water. Every little bit helps you beat the heat.
