It’s August, and for many people that means only one thing… vacation! If you’re about to head off on that long awaited road trip, this blog is for you. We’ve got the safety tips you need to make sure your car, and the people in it, get there and back in one piece.
Before You Hit the Road
There are some important steps to take before you head out, including making sure your vehicle is in the proper condition for the highway.
- Check your tires. This includes air pressure, tread wear and your spare. Tire care is especially important for those driving SUVs, trucks, or vans, as these vehicles are more susceptible to a roll over if a tire fails.
- Check your wiper blades. You don’t want to find out in the pouring rain that your windshield wipers don’t work. Make sure they’re in good condition or else replace them.
- Check your fluid levels. This includes oil, windshield wiper fluid, transmission, power steering and coolant. Make an appointment to get your vehicle serviced if you spot any leaks.
- Check your lights. Not only your headlights, which should be clean and bright, but your brake lights, turn signals, interior lights, and emergency flashers too.
- Check your air conditioning. It’s hot out there, so make sure it’s not hot inside the vehicle. Make sure your AC will pump cool air when you need it.
On the Road Safety Tips
Now that you’ve ensured your vehicle is ready for the road ahead, it’s time to hit the pavement.
- Take frequent breaks. Whether it’s a quick stop for a snack, or pulling over to stretch your legs at a rest stop, frequent breaks are the easiest way to avoid driver fatigue.
- Never drive distracted. Almost 80 percent of accidents involve some type of distracted driving. Whether it’s texting, changing the song on the IPod, or setting your GPS, let someone else do it. Focus on the road, all the time. It really does save lives.
- Make everyone wear a seatbelt. Make a rule that each person who gets into your vehicle must wear their seatbelt. No exceptions. It’s your best defense against motor-vehicle accidents, including those caused by drunk drivers.
- Never drink and drive. 32 times a day someone is killed from an alcohol related crash. Make sure you or someone you love never becomes a statistic.
- Share the road. It’s summer and you’re not the only one on vacation. Make sure to drive cautiously, taking into consideration those pedestrian, bicyclists, and motorcyclists who are looking to get a load off from work too.
