The family of a child who was allegedly abused at the hands of a teacher in northern Texas’ Keller Independent School District has filed a federal lawsuit against the accused teacher and the school district, reports CBS.
The Rideau family claims that someone they hired to take care for their son abused him, and the family has levied lawsuits against both the teacher in the Keller Independent School District and the school district itself for allegedly knowing about the problem but doing nothing to stop it.
Breggett Rideau, mother of her son Terrance, says that Terrance suffered brain damage as a baby and she was told he would not live past the age of three. Terrance is now 18 and has surpassed all expectations.
However, beginning is 2008, Rideau began to notice bruises on her son after he returned home from school at Keller Middle School. He suffered other injuries, including a dislocated knee, a broken thumb and a knot on his head that required medical attention.
The family made a formal request for a school investigation in 2010, and the results were startling. Interviews with the school staff revealed confirmation of repeated episodes of “abuse, neglect, and endangerment,” and showed that as early as 2008, an employee reported concerns to the school administration about Terrence’s teacher, who would move Terrence with his foot, eat part of his lunch, and yell at him aggressively.
Rideau is now fighting for her son’s rights in court, and is an advocate for placing cameras in special education classrooms to monitor the treatment of vulnerable students in the hopes of avoiding such abuses in the future.
