UPDATE: The driver of a van that struck a 5-year-old boy in Manassas earlier this week has been found, reports the Manassas Patch.
The driver, a 70-year-old Manassas Park resident, did not know that he struck the child. An investigation revealed that the factors of a large vehicle (over 5000 pounds), the child’s small size (about 50 pounds), the darkness and the fact that the child was wearing dark clothes contributed to the driver’s lack of knowledge.
Police are not pursuing charges against the driver after speaking with attorneys with the Commonwealth Attorney’s office.
The boy was taken out of the car by his mother before he ran into the van’s path and was struck. He has been released from a local area hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Original Story: Prince William County Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck a 5-year-old boy before speeding away, reports the Manassas Patch.
The incident occurred in Manassas on Tuesday, Nov. 5, on the 8200 block of Rainwater Circle at about 6:43 p.m. According to witnesses, the small boy had just been let out of the vehicle by his mother when he saw another member of his family across the street and ran greet them. He was struck by a van, which then sped away from the area without stopping.
The boy was transported by air to an area hospital and he is expected to make a full recovery. Neither the victim nor the witnesses of the accident saw the identity of the driver.
The van police are searching for is described as a commercial style Ford E350, white, with a sliding door on the passenger side, a ladder rack on the top, and a dent in the front left of the bumper.
