With weather problems causing delays across the Midwest and East Coast, the busiest week of travel in the United States may quickly become a frustrating one. If you are experiencing travel delays and are wondering what on earth you can do to stay sane, here are some Thanksgiving Travel Tips, courtesy of The Wall Street Journal, to tryout.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Tips
- Look for alternative routes. If you can avoid a connecting airport that is in danger of experiencing bad weather, you may be able to cut out the storm from your travel plan.
- Rebook in person. You’ll avoid long hold times on airline phone lines, and those agents at the airport are often more helpful than the ones on the telephone.
- Use your travel agent. If you booked using an agent, utilize them to rebook flights and arrange for a hotel if you’re stuck. Airlines are also likely to hand out hotel discount coupons, so make sure to look into that.
- Sign up to receive flight alerts. Services like FlightStats.com get information from the Federal Aviation Authority as well as the airlines themselves. Also sign up for the specific airline alerts.
- Pack with delays in mind. Don’t check any of your medications, as it could be a while before you see your bags again with cancellations or rerouting. Pack some food and bring an empty water bottle to fill up after the security checkpoint.
- Check the weather. It can be difficult to predict if the storm is going to affect your flight, but check the forecast of your departure, connecting, and arrival airports to have an idea of what you’re up against.
- Stay calm and understand that it’s not the end of the world. Airline agents want to help people who understand the dilemma and don’t have a screaming fit in line. Airlines are people-oriented, so you’ll probably get where you’re supposed to go sooner or later.
